Boundaries & Brown Families

Culturally responsive boundaries
Boundaries are typically a foreign concept for most collectivist cultures and communities. While boundaries are important in all relationships, it is imperative to be mindful of culturally-responsive ways that balance the values of collectivism with protecting one’s individualism. This presentation discusses what boundaries are, why they are important, how they can enhance our relationships, and ways to respond to family members in such a way that does not unnecessarily harm the relationship.

Target audience: Individuals (or families) that come from a collectivistic culture (Black, Indigenous, People of Color; immigrant families).

Exploring Cultural Identity

Navigating identity & belonging as a child with immigrant parents
For many adult children of immigrant parents, growing up at the crossroads of cultures brings both deep connection and moments of uncertainty. It often means honoring the values and traditions of family while also carving out space for one’s own voice and choices. This balance shapes a journey of belonging that is layered and complex. Naming this “in-betweenness” can be deeply validating, reminding us that bicultural identity is not a conflict to resolve, but a rich experience to be honored. In voicing what so many quietly carry, we create room for compassion, integration, and a fuller sense of home within ourselves..

Target audience: those who have grown up with immigrant parents, ages 13+

Parenting & Anxiety

Supportive parenting with an anxious child
Anxiety can be tough. Not just for kids, but for parents too. It’s hard to know when to step in, when to give space, and how to help without accidentally making things worse. In this talk, we’ll take a closer look at where anxiety comes from, why some kids are more sensitive to it, and how it actually makes sense from a biological and evolutionary perspective. We’ll also talk through ways you can respond that are supportive and validating, without being overly accommodating or permissive. The goal is to help you feel more confident in the way you’re showing up for your anxious child and to give you both the tools needed to move through anxiety.

Target audience: parents of children/teens with anxiety (general anxiety, separation anxiety, specific phobias).

Parenting a child with ADHD can be exhausting, confusing, and sometimes really frustrating. This talk is all about helping you understand what’s going on in your child’s brain, why certain behaviors show up the way they do, and why your child isn’t just being lazy, defiant, or careless. We’ll cover what ADHD actually looks like in everyday life, and how you can respond in ways that are supportive without feeling like you’re constantly walking on eggshells. You’ll also hear ways to manage your own stress and avoid some of the common traps (like accidentally shaming or dismissing your child’s experience).
